An interesting blog was posted April 8 on the Newsweek website by health care reporter Sharon Begley. It reports on the results of a study on Neuromonics, a treatment for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. The results were presented in April at the American Academy of Audiology.
According to the study, 45 patients who were treated with Neuromonics said their psychological distress was “reduced from a 46 to 20” after six months of treatment. The device uses a special sound embedded in music to rewire the auditory cortex. The effect is a re-training of the brain to tune out the internal sounds that prove so disturbing to patients.
Shohet Ear Associates has been part of this study on Neuromonics, and we have offered this inner ear treatment for several years. In fact, we were among the first in Southern California to offer Neuronomics and have been gratified to see the improvement it has made in our patients’ lives.
