The American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) is partnering with the Hearing Health Foundation (HHF) to encourage individuals to pledge that they will have their hearing tested during May for Better Hearing and Speech Month.For every person who takes the online pledge, HealthyHearing.com, an online hearing health resource, will donate $1.00 (up to $10,000) to the Healthy Hearing Foundation.

Great Information on Hearing Problems

The April/May 2013 issue of AARP The Magazine includes an excellent article on the four most common hearing problems, the causes and potential treatments. Check it out if you or someone you love has trouble hearing in noisy restaurants, have a feeling of fullness in the ears, have a sudden hearing loss or are having nausea or balance problems accompanied by trouble hearing.

Auditory Neuropathy

Auditory neuropathy is a hearing disorder in which sound enters the inner ear normally, but the transmission of signals from the inner ear to the brain is impaired. People with auditory neuropathy may have normal hearing, or a hearing loss ranging from mild to severe. Treatments may include hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other technologies.

New Device May Help Differentiate Vertigo From Stroke

People suddenly suffering from dizziness may be experiencing vertigo—or they may be having a stroke. Until recently, the only definitive way to correctly diagnose the cause was through an MRI scan. A new study suggests that a device called a video-oculography machine may help doctors assess the cause of a patient’s dizziness, more quickly and at the bedside.
